Skills and Qualifications:

Associate Degree from an accredited American Sign Language interpreting program or 2 years post-secondary education (60 credits) and an interpreter technician certificate.

Must be able to comply with the licensing requirements of the State of Wisconsin Sign Language Interpreting Regulations.

One year work experience directly related to position.

Level 1 or 2 Interpreting or Transliterating under the Wisconsin Interpreting and Transliterating Assessment, or attainment of this level within 6 months of employment.

Preferred: at least 2 years interpreting experience, RID certified and/or NAD levels 3, 4 or 5.

Ability to travel.

Valid driver’s license and insurable under the District’s standard vehicle/liability insurance policy.

Required Education:
Duties and Responsibilities:

Will need to work a flexible schedule including daytime, evening, and weekend hours as needed.

Interprets for deaf and hard of hearing students in a variety of instructional settings, such as classroom lectures, labs, group discussions, field trips, tutoring sessions and other settings as deemed appropriate by the lead interpreter by using sign language and/or oral interpreting skills and/or other appropriate manual and oral methods of communication.

Develops technical sign materials in preparation for classroom and classroom activities.

Confers and plans with students, teachers, and other interpreters in preparation for interpreting assignments.

Observes and reports student progress or problems to sign language interpreter supervisor.

Aid in recruiting of note takers and tutors for deaf and hard of hearing students. Works cooperatively with deaf and hard of hearing students as well as other disabled and non-disables students in multicultural, multiethnic educational environment.

 

Provides general office support to the Special Needs Office.

Knowledge of cultural aspects of deafness and cross-cultural mediation.

Knowledge of and skills with various methods of expressive and voice interpreting/transliterating (Consecutive, Simultaneous, Manually, Coded English, American Sign Language).

Ability to convey information, intent, and spirit of speaker to the deaf or hard of hearing student(s).

Ability to conform to an established work schedule.

Ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner.

Ability to understand and follow instructions precisely.

Effective interpersonal skills.

Ability to exercise tact and discretion.

Other duties as assigned.

Salary and Benefit: $21.53/hr for 6 months; $23.25/hr for the next 18 months; then to $24.97/hr, or as applicable per contract for internal employees
