Housing in Indian Country has become one of its greatest challenges. Approximately, 40% of on-reservation housing is inadequate. Overcrowding, lack of plumbing and substandard conditions compound social problems to such a degree that health care, education and employment suffer. NCAI works closely with other national organizations, including the National American Indian Housing Council [www.naihc.net] to advocate for increased home-ownership, funding and culturally appropriate housing, among other issues.
