About THIS POSITION
The NCAI Communications Director is a key member of the NCAI External Affairs team and is the go-to communications professional for the organization, NCAI membership, the media, and general public. The Communications Director works closely with the Executive Director, NCAI Board, and Senior Staff, to develop and execute strategies to strengthen communications efforts and to engage and educate the media and the general public. The successful candidate will be equipped to utilize all available communications tools from print media to the web, and social media to press engagement, to strengthen NCAI’s efforts to engage Indian Country, our non-Native partners, the media, and the general.
• 7-10 years of experience in media relations or related communications field;
• Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field, 10 years, progressive Communications experience may substitute for a degree;
• Excellent writing and editing skills with experience writing for press releases, opinion, the web, and publications;
• Experience organizing and managing press events;
• Previous experience managing communications projects: websites, publications, papers, newsletters and/or magazines;
• Strong comprehension of social media practices, branding, cause marketing, and digital communications;
• Track record of making good judgments about media priorities and management of resources;
• Capacity to deliver quality work under pressure, meet deadlines consistently, and handle multiple projects concurrently;
• Experience working with Native tribal governments and/or Native organizations with a sophisticated knowledge of tribal communities;
• Ability to work respectfully and effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds;
• Excellent communications, interpersonal, and organizational skills;
• Ability to both take direction and work independently, taking initiative within areas of responsibility;
• Strong PC computer skills (Word, Excel, Web, Photoshop)

Duties And Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will also possess:
• Experience working in a policy advocacy environment, especially with elected tribal leaders or equivalent (Members of Congress, governors, etc.); and
• Web design/HTML and/or Content Management System experience, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing, photography and photo editing, email newsletter and digital advocacy systems.
Under the direction of the Executive Director and the Director of External Affairs, responsibilities include:
• Develop, implement, execute, and evaluate an integrated communication strategy, to include a responsive and proactive approach to media engagement, in collaboration with senior leadership;
• Develop and implement issue-focused and education campaigns on NCAI priorities to effectively engage Indian Country and/or non-Native partners and the general public;
• Oversee plans and activities related to organizational branding and marketing strategy, including event and membership marketing efforts;
• Manage press and community outreach, including: writing and pitching press releases; expanding press database and developing new relationships with reporters and editors; tracking and reporting on media coverage garnered by NCAI; organizing media events, including press conferences and briefings; and creating public relations materials, including press kits, opinion pieces, talking points, speeches, annual reports, newsletters, presentations, and web content;
• Oversee ongoing website development, content publishing, and digital project requests in collaboration with NCAI staff;
• Coordinate all print publications, collateral, social media and digital advocacy efforts;
• Coordinate interviews and other media activities involving president, executive director, tribal leaders, and senior NCAI staff;
• Coordinate with technology support staff to ensure internal and external communications that support the NCAI strategic plan, programs, and operations in an efficient and effective manner;
• Provide communications assistance to national and regional intertribal organizations as well as tribal communities, as requested;
• Coordinate and manage the activities of an outside public relations firm or other consultants, as needed; and
• Other duties as assigned.
Salary And Benefits:
This is a salaried position that offers competitive salary and benefits (including health benefits, 401(k) plan, vacation time, etc.). Salary will be determined based on experience
