Skills And Qualifications:

  • Strong analytic abilities, including experience analyzing data in Excel and presenting findings clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent research skills, including the ability to use and interpret a range of sources and clearly summarize findings in writing.

  • A desire to develop or deepen your programming skills in Stata. Experience with Stata or another statistical software package is helpful but not required.
  • A desire to develop or deepen your understanding of federal housing policy and racial equity, particularly institutional and structural racism and its impact on racial and economic segregation. Prior experience with affordable housing, low-income issues, public policy, institutional and structural racism, and/or coursework related to these issues is helpful but not required.
  • Experience visualizing geographic data in ArcGIS, Tableau, or other mapping software is helpful but not required.

Required Education:

  • Research Assistant: Bachelor’s degree in any field that requires strong quantitative skills.?
  • Research Associate: Master’s degree in or equivalent experience in any field that requires strong quantitative skills.

Duties And Responsibilities:

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities is seeking to hire a Research Assistant or Research Associate to work with its highly skilled Housing Policy team. The Center is a strategic policy institute that informs and shapes public policies to reduce poverty, promote equity, and build opportunity. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing timely, evidence-based policy ideas and strategies, and shaping policy debates at the federal and state levels on a broad array of critical issues affecting low- and moderate-income people.

The Center’s Housing Policy team is a leading source of expertise on federal low-income housing programs with a strong record of advancing policies that improve their effectiveness and help drive the national conversation around affordable housing for low-income people. In recent years, the Housing Policy team’s work has included:

  • Ensuring that Housing Choice Vouchers and other federal housing programs for low-income people are adequately funded and effective;
  • Advancing federal housing policies that reduce poverty, inequality, housing instability and homelessness; expand families’ access to safe neighborhoods with good schools and other opportunities; and improve people’s health and upward mobility; and
  • Developing and promoting innovative housing policies to enable more low-income people to live in decent, affordable homes.

The Research Assistant or Associate works collaboratively with Housing team members to provide information, data, and technical assistance to an array of important stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners, journalists, and other organizations. This position is an exceptional foundational role for people seeking to build a career in public policy. The Research Assistant or Associate will also participate in a skill and knowledge development program for early-career Center staff.???


  • Supports the analysis of?large government surveys and program data to assess policy proposals and estimate the need for rental assistance, often focusing on how they will affect certain communities such as low-income renters, communities of color, people experiencing homelessness, and families with children.
  • Contributes to graphics, presentations, and written analyses for policy and research reports, blogs, fact sheets, and chart books.
  • Helps the team stay on top of the latest social science research to inform new policy ideas and program recommendations that improve federal rental assistance for low-income families.
  • Helps explain federal housing policy issues to non-housing experts, including interns or other teams at the Center, partner organizations, state or local advocates, or important stakeholders from other policy areas, such as healthcare or tax and budget.
  • Assists team members responding to information requests from policymakers, the media, and other national and local organizations, often on tight deadlines.
  • Aids in the cleaning, updating, and management of longitudinal datasets to ensure the team’s work is accurate and easily updated in the future.
  • Helps ensure the accuracy and transparency of the analytical work, including developing processes for checking your work and the work of interns and documenting the sources and methods used.
  • Consults with academic and policy experts inside and outside the Center to help inform the team’s research and policy priorities.
  • Attends coalition meetings, congressional briefings and hearings, and other events as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned within the Housing Policy team.
