Welfare Reform Update -- March 24, 1998  
 

On Thursday, April 23, 1998, NCAI will host its second national welfare reform forum at the Double Tree Hotel Lloyd Center in Portland, Oregon. This event titled Welfare Reform Impacts on Tribal Social Services: A National Forum will feature federal, state and tribal representatives addressing such topics as welfare reform's impacts on tribal housing and transportation service needs, alcohol and substance abuse, domestic violence, suicide prevention and mental health, emergency family assistance, Medicaid/Medicare impacts, food stamps and commodities programs, child care, child support and enforcement, child abuse and neglect and elder abuse and care. Once finalized, an agenda for this event will be made available via NCAI broadcast fax and the NCAI Web Site.
 

NCAI's April welfare reform forum in Portland will immediately follow the 16th Annual "Protecting Our Children" National American Indian Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect, sponsored by the National Indian Child Welfare Association, April 20-22, 1998, also held at the Double Tree Hotel~Lloyd Center in Portland, Oregon. The Double Tree will hold a block of 25 rooms for the NCAI welfare reform forum until April 1st. On Saturday, February 28th, 1998, NCAI held the first in a series of national forums to address the impacts of welfare reform in Indian country. The event titled Welfare Reform Implementation in Indian Country: A National Forum addressed five major topics which included Tribal TANF Plans, Job Creation and Job Training, Federal/State/Tribal Partnerships, Children and Family Support Services and Impact Data Collection Methodologies.
