Skills & Qualifications

Juris Doctorate degree, plus seven years of pertinent experience representing tribal interests. An emphasis in natural resources, tribal treaty rights and Indian law is preferred. Licensed to practice law in the state of Washington is preferred. Working knowledge of federal, state and local laws related to fisheries, fish habitat and the environment. Ability to analyze complex legal issues as well as federal and state laws, regulations, and ordinances. Ability to draft legislation and administrative laws. Ability to draft legal memoranda and policy proposals accurately reflecting the current law, known science, economics, and politics as related to fisheries, the environment, and habitats. Exceptional written and oral communication skills. Strong analytical and research skills. Public speaking skills desired. Effective interpersonal, communication and teambuilding skills including ability to work cooperatively with diverse interests and groups. Ability to operate computer word processing, presentation, spreadsheet, and other software programs. Valid Washington State Driver’s License.

Duties & Responsibilities

Provide legal and policy advice to the NWIFC and its member tribes on fisheries, environmental and habitat related laws and issues. Coordinate the development of legal analysis and policy support with the NWIFC staff for fisheries, environmental and habitat related issues. Provide coordination of tribal attorneys’ activities, monitoring implementation efforts and assisting in the development of legal strategies on issues related to United States vs. Washington Phase II and other fisheries, environmental and habitat related litigation. Provide occasional support on internal legal issues.

Salary & Benefits

$81,238 - $114,219 annually
