OTJ Consultations: Legislative proposals addressing public safety issues in Tribal communities
Tribal leaders interested in participating must register by 5:00 p.m. ET on March 13, 2026.

The Department of Justice Office of Tribal Justice (OTJ) is inviting Tribal leaders to participate in a virtual government-to-government consultation on legislative proposals addressing public safety issues in Tribal communities. The consultation will be held March 16-20, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. ET each day, with different proposals discussed each session.

The 12 legislative proposals include expanding the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Tribal Prisoner Program, removing the statute of limitations for second-degree murder, amending Tribal law enforcement access to firearms, expanding U.S. Marshals Service authority to execute Tribal violent felony warrants, establishing federal jurisdiction over child abuse crimes, and amending the Stored Communications Act to allow Tribal courts to issue search warrants for electronic communications, among others.
