FCC Extends Key Filing Window for Tribal Broadcasters
FCC Extends Key Filing Window for Tribal Broadcasters

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) listened to Tribal voices! We are thrilled to share that the FCC has officially delayed the upcoming Noncommercial Educational (NCE) FM Translator Filing Window, moving it to November 4–17, 2026.

How We Got Here: Last month, NCAI partnered with Native Public Media to send a formal letter to the FCC urging them to push back the original August deadline. We emphasized that a compressed summer schedule simply does not provide Tribal Nations with adequate time to complete necessary engineering studies, conduct budget analyses, and secure essential Tribal Council approvals.

The Impact: The FCC agreed, directly citing our letter and acknowledging that "a November filing window better aligns with Tribal governmental processes."

Because NCE translator filing windows are rare, this extension is a massive victory. It ensures Tribal Nations have a realistic opportunity to participate, allowing communities to expand locally controlled media, preserve language, and strengthen emergency communications for decades to come!
