WASHINGTON D.C. – The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) congratulates Senator Markwayne Mullin (Cherokee Nation) on his confirmation as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Secretary Mullin’s confirmation to a cabinet-level position reflects the growing presence of Native voices in the highest levels of federal leadership. His lived experience as a citizen of the Cherokee Nation brings an important perspective to a department whose work directly impacts Tribal Nations, including emergency management, border security, cybersecurity, and infrastructure protection.
During his time in Congress, Secretary Mullin served on the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and engaged on issues impacting Tribal communities, including economic development, infrastructure, and public safety. He has emphasized the federal government’s responsibility to Indian Country and the importance of understanding Tribal issues beyond partisan lines, underscoring the unique trust and treaty obligations owed to Tribal Nations.
“We look forward to working with Secretary Mullin to ensure Tribal Nations are treated as full partners in homeland security efforts to advance policies that address the unique needs and priorities of our communities through meaningful Tribal consultation,” said NCAI President Mark Macarro.
