NCAI Statement on Federal Recognition of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina

WASHINGTON D.C. — The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) acknowledges the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina (Lumbee Tribe) as the 575th federally recognized Tribe through the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) signed into law this week. This decision highlights the Lumbee Tribe's steadfast dedication and resilience, paving the way for new opportunities and rights for its members.

NCAI recognizes the work of Lumbee leaders and community advocates who worked toward this outcome. NCAI remains committed to supporting a fair and consistent process for all Tribal Nations seeking federal acknowledgment.

NCAI looks forward to continued engagement with the Lumbee Tribe in this new chapter of their government-to-government relationship and will continue to advocate for Tribal sovereignty and the fulfillment of the federal trust responsibility across Indian Country.
