The Accounting Manager performs highly specialized accounting work required to maintain the MWT's general ledger and oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash reconciliations, payroll, and post-award grant accounting functions. Working under the direction of the Tribal Comptroller, the Accounting Manager directs and coordinates the daily activities of the accounting staff. Ensures the prompt and accurate recording of revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities, while maintaining the integrity of internal controls. Leads the monthly close process.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and extensive experience with computerized accounting systems. • Preferred Certified Public Accountant • Advanced knowledge and experience with financial accounting systems, spreadsheet functionality, and financial reporting writing applications. • Experience with financial accounting systems should be diverse, having worked with more than one system during one’s career. • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff at all levels of the organization. • Manage multiple tasks with efficiency and necessary priority. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or finance. • Experience in governmental and/or non-profit fund accounting. Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience managing federal awards and accounting teams, including supervisory experience. • Four years of experience being responsible for the overall accounting system and the accuracy of the trial balance. OTHER REQUIREMENTS • Ideal candidate must possess strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills • Possess integrity and ethics in business. • The successful candidate must also pass a criminal offender record inquiry and pre-employment drug screening.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Oversee daily accounting activities, including but not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, prepaid expenses, post-award grant accounting, and accruals. Responsible for the quality of the data entered into the accounting system and the accuracy of the trial balance. Manages the monthly accounting close process and oversees the monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts. Ensures prompt, accurate month-end and year-end closings while maintaining GAAP compliance. Supervises, directs, and reviews the workflow of the accounts payable staff, including ensuring accurate invoice recording, timely payment, and overseeing the management and reconciliation of the accounts payable module within the financial system. Supervises, directs, and reviews the work of the accounts receivable staff, including ensuring accurate recording of charges, timely drawdowns of grant awards, timely collection of receivables, accurate recording of cash receipts, and overseeing the management and reconciliation of accounts receivable. Supervises, directs, and reviews the work of the payroll staff, ensuring accurate processing of weekly payroll and all related tax and compliance filings. Manages the integration of system payroll data with the financial and human resource systems. Oversees monthly cash account reconciliations, ensuring accurate and timely reconciliations and resolution of outstanding items. In collaboration with the Tribal Comptroller, evaluates accounting policies and procedures, identifying weaknesses in internal controls.
