Position Overview: APPLY HERE NWIFC is seeking candidates for the full-time, exempt role of Biometrician. This position is integral to the Fisheries Services team and will develop and advise tribal, state, federal and international biologists on statistical and quantitative methods, tools, and models needed for management of fish, shellfish and habitat. Our Biometrician will provide modeling and statistical analysis services to Tribal and NWIFC technical staff. These services include assisting in the development and application of harvest management models; conducting statistical analyses; report writing and assisting in the development of study designs and sampling strategies; providing general statistical consulting to Tribal and NWIFC staff.
Required Qualifications: ● A Bachelors or Masters of Science in Mathematics, Statistics, Biometry, or related Quantitative Science (or) a Bachelors or Master of Science in Fisheries or other natural resources field with major course major course work in mathematics, statistics, population dynamics, and/or natural resource modeling plus one year of pertinent work experience. ● Knowledge of sample design, population dynamics, and methods of statistical analysis. ● Proficient with computers and familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access. ● Fluency in at least one programming language, preferably R. ● Able to accommodate heavy overnight travel during parts of the year (especially Feb – April). ● A valid Driver’s License and ability to be covered by NWIFC auto and liability insurances for essential job duties.
Key Responsibilities: 1. Participate in joint Tribal/State/Federal forums in the execution of new harvest management models. The incumbent will become familiar with algorithms, data, and development of current harvest management models. 2. Participate in and provide technical assistance to the Chinook Technical Committee of the Pacific Salmon Commission. 3. Develop and review sample designs and analyses for projects by tribal biologists, NWIFC staff, and other researchers. 4. Analyze natural resources data for tribal biologists and NWIFC staff and document the methods and results of these analyses through reports and detailed memos
