The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to healthcare providers by assisting with direct patient care, laboratory specimen collection, preventive health services, chronic disease management, and care coordination. The Medical Assistant promotes efficient clinic operations while providing compassionate, culturally respectful care to patients of Wassaja Memorial Health Center.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: • Knowledge of medical assisting principles and clinical procedures. • Knowledge of infection prevention and OSHA standards. • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations. • Knowledge of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling. • Knowledge of immunization schedules. • Knowledge of chronic disease management, including diabetes and hypertension. • Ability to perform point-of-care testing. • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families. • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. • Proficiency in Electronic Health Records and Microsoft Office. MINIMUM QUALIFICATION/EDUCATION: • High School Diploma or GED required. • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred. • Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA), (RMA) • Current BLS certification required. • Experience performing venipuncture and specimen collection is required. • One (1) year of experience in a primary care or family practice clinic preferred. • Experience working in Tribal or Indian Health Service facilities is preferred.
TASKS: Clinical Duties • Prepare patients for examinations and treatments. • Obtain and document vital signs, height, weight, BMI, pain assessment, and chief complaint. • Update medications, allergies, medical history, and health screenings in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection for laboratory testing following established protocols. • Collect and properly label laboratory specimens for processing. • Perform CLIA-waived point-of-care testing including blood glucose, Hemoglobin A1C, urinalysis, pregnancy testing, rapid strep, influenza/COVID testing, and other approved tests. • Administer immunizations and medications within the Medical Assistant scope of practice and clinic policy. • Perform EKGs and other diagnostic testing as directed. • Assist providers with examinations and minor procedures. • Perform wound care and dressing changes as delegated. • Maintain exam rooms, ensuring adequate supplies and proper infection control practices. • Clean and disinfect medical equipment and patient care areas. Patient Care • Reinforce provider instructions and educate patients on medications, immunizations, diabetes management, preventive care, and healthy lifestyle choices. • Assist with chronic disease management initiatives, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. • Coordinate referrals, laboratory testing, imaging, and follow-up appointments. Administrative Duties • Document accurately in the Electronic Health Record. • Process medication refill requests according to clinic policy. • Assist with patient scheduling and clinic flow. • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA. Quality Improvement • Participate in Quality Improvement (QI) and Performance Improvement (PI) projects. • Assist with diabetes audits, immunization tracking, preventive health initiatives, and AAAHC accreditation activities.
