Under the supervision of the Human Services Director, the Social Services Manager serves as the lead coordinator and administrator of human and social service programs for Tribal members and families. This position is responsible for assessing needs, managing cases, ensuring quality delivery of services, maintaining compliance with Tribal and grant reporting requirements, and advocating on behalf of Tribal members. The Social Services Manager also plays a leadership role in designing and implementing community-based initiatives that promote wellness, family stability, and cultural connection.

• Strong knowledge of human services systems, case management principles, and client advocacy
• Working knowledge of local, state, and federal assistance programs
• Cultural competence and sensitivity when working with Tribal communities
• Ability to develop individualized service plans and monitor progress
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
• Ability to collaborate across agencies and build strong professional relationships
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and case management systems
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously
• Ability to work independently and maintain professional boundaries
• Knowledge of confidentiality standards and HIPAA regulations
• Willingness to attend court hearings and advocate for clients when necessary


Physical Demands
• Ability to sit, stand, drive, and use a computer for extended periods
• Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds may be required
• Must be able to conduct home visits and travel throughout the Island and occasionally off-Island as needed


Work Environment
• Work is primarily performed in an office setting, but may include home or institutional visits, attendance at court hearings, and off-site meetings
• Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday hours may be required
• Travel is required (local and regional)

Required Education
• Associate degree or higher in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a closely related field OR
• Five (5) years of experience in counseling, case management, or social service coordination (including work with families, teens, or adults)
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Required Experience
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience providing direct services to children and families, including group facilitation and court advocacy
• Valid driver’s license, personal vehicle, and proof of insurance; must be insurable under Tribal policy
• Must pass background checks including CORI/SORI and pre-employment screening


Preferred education and experience
• Master’s degree in Social Work or a closely related field
• Licensure in Social Work or Clinical Social Work (e.g., LSW, LCSW, LICSW)
• Previous experience working with Tribal communities or Indigenous populations
• Certification in relevant areas such as trauma-informed care, substance use counseling, or child welfare


Tribal Preference
In accordance with the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA) and the policies of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah), preference in hiring will be given to qualified Tribal members, their spouses, and descendants, as well as other Native American applicants. Proof of Tribal affiliation or descent may be required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Assess the needs and eligibility of Tribal members for social and human services; provide referrals to appropriate Tribal, local, state, or federal programs.
• Manage case files and coordinate services across Tribal departments and external agencies to ensure a holistic and culturally appropriate approach.
• Plan, implement, and evaluate community-based programs and initiatives that support the well-being of Tribal families and individuals.
• Maintain accurate records and complete required documentation, including case logs, statistical reports, and performance data.
• Conduct home or institutional visits as needed to assess living situations, deliver services, or provide follow-up care.
• Advocate for Tribal members and ensure follow-through on referrals and service plans. Collaborate with the Human Services Director to identify unmet needs and develop new or improved services.
• Represent the Tribe in human services-related functions, both internally and externally, with professionalism and cultural awareness.
• Stay informed on relevant policies, programs, and best practices by attending trainings, workshops, and conferences.
• Participate in departmental and organizational meetings as assigned.
• Serve as a point of contact for other agencies and institutions in matters concerning Tribal member support and advocacy.
• Perform additional duties as assigned to support the mission of the Human Services Department.

Salary & Benefits

$69,056 - $96,678 annually
