JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for supervising, educating and supporting students to help them accomplish learning benchmarks. The ideal candidate will be passionate for the job with an ability to reach out to students and create a relationship of mutual trust. Secondly, this person will know how to organize learning and make learning an easy and meaningful process. The goal is to help cultivate the students’ interest in education and be their dedicated ally in the entire process of learning and development. The Iwesteleq (Teacher) will work in conjunction with the Education department in developing and implementing appropriate learning plans for students and families of the Nooksack Indian Tribe. This person will work with the Tribal Liaison and represent the Nooksack Tribe within the school system and advocating on behalf of our students and families under the direction, supervision and leadership of the Youth/Education Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:

Bachelors Degree in an Educational Related Field. Master’s Level preferred but not required.

Valid State Teaching Certificate

· Experience as a teacher in developing curricula, preparing lessons plans and assigning homework or other learning opportunities to increase skill levels.

· Experience as a teacher in the preparation of tracking progress, providing remedial intervention, research data collection of persistence and academic growth and ability to report progress to Education Director and families.

REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES POSITION:

Ability to develop lesson plans to groups or individuals and successfully instruct students in theories, methods and tasks.

Ability to effectively communicate with others and clearly express complex ideas

Proficient active listening skills to understand and adapts to students’ various learning needs

Strong public speaking and oral presentation skills

Excellent organization and time management skills

Advanced technology skills to track student progress, gains and present creative lessons

Leadership skills and patience for working with students of all ages

Experience working with Native American Youth and/or diverse backgrounds preferred

Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times

Work independently

Ability to plan learning experiences for the Summer Youth Program

REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.

Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver’s License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):

The standard work week is 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday (occasionally may have to work evenings) Summer hours at Monday to Friday, Time TBA.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.

Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.

Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone system

Ability to lift up to 20+ pounds without assistance occasionally.

Typical office setting with environmentally controlled conditions.

Read, write, speak and understand English

Ability to listen, understands customers, and has the ability to translate rules, regulations, and policies to clients so they understand the issues/problems.

Operate in mentally and physically stressful situations with composure.

May have to walk/drive between office locations under a variety of conditions.

Duties & Responsibilities

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work closely LEA teachers to help the student maintain satisfactory classwork, homework, behavior and to meet learning objectives by providing one-on-one or small group support to students who need additional help in any subject area.

Document student progress, meeting goals and objectives

With guidance from the classroom teacher, adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the interests and learning styles of the student to receive personalized instruction and explanations of how to complete assignments.

Provide students with tutoring and working with students one-on-one when they need extra help or attention

Helping students improve study methods, test taking techniques and habits to help retain and recall information when they are back in the classroom.

Develop, plan and implement the After School STEAM Program to provide homework assistance.

Counsel students in identifying and dealing with their academic and social problems.

Collaborate with classroom teacher and parent on a regular basis regarding student progress

Maintain positive relationships with students, parents, coworkers, supervisor and LEA educators and YP staff

Guide/advise Youth Program Staff in both the After School and Summer YP to promote continuous learning.

Prepare for college level prerequisites or increases in skill levels, credit retrieval, Running Start Students

Meet with the Director and Youth Program staff and other academic/educational entities on a regular basis

Supervise the Iwesteleq staff including the Tribal Liaison in order to promote learning, academic intervention and enhance communication with the schools.

Assist Youth Program staff to enroll in the Para Ed Program to gain certification.

Contribute to Ts’ simil To’ :lme’ls (Nurturing Wisdom) research to develop best practices and a model to replicate and contribute to research that will be used to report to the Tribal Council and contribute to grant writing needs statements, cohort tracking and persistence. Project management will include identifying community/evidence-based theories and development, monitoring, evaluating and reporting.

Develop summer youth program activities that promotes academic learning

OTHER DUTIES:

Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
