The current political discourse in the United States has reached a new level of divisiveness where opposing parties have gone to their respective corners with little peacemaking to bridge the divide. In the midst of this troubling state of affairs are hundreds of tribal nations, which are wisely buffering their own governments from the fray while remaining observant of the state of play. This lecture will examine how current trends in the American political discourse may have a collateral or direct impact on tribal nations' sovereign rights and authorities for better or for worse and what role Native American legal practitioners can play in this dynamic, changing landscape. The speaker, Hilary C. Tompkins, will bring her experience as a Native American woman and former Solicitor of the U.S. Department of the Interior to offer her insights as to what influences government decisionmakers in Indian affairs law and policy and how current dynamics can

The Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) curriculum was developed between 1990 and 1994 and has stood the test of time as an effective healing and planning model for tribal communities addressing impacts of historical and inter-generational trauma. Impacts include substance abuse, suicide, meth and other drug use, violence, poverty and more. This training will teach people how to facilitate a GONA for your tribe or agency. Participants will go through the four foundational phases of the GONA - belonging, mastery, interdependence and generosity. 3rd Annual National Native Health Research Training Conference

As part of the larger effort to invest in our Nation’s infrastructure and bring prosperity to Indian country, the Department of the Interior (DOI), the Department of Education (ED), and the Institute for Museum and Library Sciences (IMLS) are hosting a two-day, solution-driven summit on Tribal Broadband. On 

, the agencies will host Tribes, private industry, federal programs, and other stakeholders in a two-day National Tribal Broadband Summit in Washington, D.C.

This landmark event is the chance for Tribal Leaders, representatives of Tribal organizations, representatives of schools and school districts serving under-connected Native students, federal program managers, and policy-makers at multiple levels of government to facilitate meaningful interactions. The two-day summit will revolve around actionable steps to close the broadband gap and aim to identify new opportunities for the development of various partnerships.

This is just one of the many steps the Department of the Interior is taking to support the American Broadband Initiative. Last year, the Department of the Interior hosted a Broadband Roundtable.

National Tribal Broadband Summit

American Indians of the Southwest began making functional pottery at least 2,000 years ago. The skills needed to make these vessels passed from generation to generation, a tradition that continues to this day. Geographic variations in clay, along with regional preferences for certain designs and shapes, meant that distinct styles became associated with permanent villages, which the Spanish called pueblos. When the railroad brought visitors to the Southwest in the late 19th century, potters responded by selling their wares, and an ongoing market became established for pottery made as art.

This event is sponsored by HUD's Office of Native American Programs. This two-day Summit - “Asset Building: A Pathway to Economic Self-Determination” provides an opportunity for Native asset building practitioners to network and get up to date information on self-sufficiency initiatives taking place in Indian Country. Throughout the Summit participants will have an opportunity to:


• To exchange ideas about asset building in Indian Country
• To Identify key problem areas and barriers that prevent families from achieving self-sufficiency
• To highlight best practices in self-sufficiency and asset building
• To develop strategies and action items that will support Native residents as they move on their path toward self-sufficiency
• To network and connect with individuals representing a broad spectrum of entities such as national intermediaries, state funding agencies, lenders, federal agencies, financial regulatory, entrepreneurs, for-profits, tribes, and Tribally Designated Housing Entities (TDHEs)

Workshops will address; financial education, credit counseling, rental readiness, homeownership and child savings accounts. Workshops will incorporate key learning strategies to:


• Access key financial education programs to help families make informed financial decisions
• Gain an understanding of the impact that policies have on a family and community economic success
• Identify resources available to fund asset building. Presenters will address a wide mix of topics that focus on youth, families, culture, asset preservation
• Describe what self-sufficiency means and visualize what self-sufficiency could mean for their residents and their TDHEs
• Explore the role of financial education as the foundation to asset building
• Incorporate asset building concepts and tools into their self-sufficiency programming.

National Native Asset Building Summit

The 2019 Tribal Consultation with the Administration for Children and Families, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be held at the Pechanga Resort and Casino. Tribal Consultations are opportunities for ACF officials to hear from Tribal leaders and discuss issues important to them as well as ACF programs, including the Administration for Native Americans, LIHEAP, TANF, Head Start, Children’s Bureau, and the Office of Trafficking in Persons.

ACF Tribal Consultation

The 36th Annual National Tribal Health Conference will take place in Temecula, California, September 16-19, 2019. National Tribal Health Conference (NTHC) is the largest American Indian and Alaska Native specific gathering each year focused specifically on health. The conference focuses on exploring health policy and its impact on Tribes, advancing Tribal capacity to expand own policy work, and policy and political work in the arenas of health care, public, behavioral, and environmental health.

The conference features multiple tracks of concurrent breakout sessions, as well as general plenary sessions that feature nationally recognized guest speakers and elected and appointed governmental officials. Two critical components of the National Tribal Health Conference program are the listening and government consultation sessions that are free to the public and offered on pre- or post-conference days.

The conference is hosted and planned annually by the National Indian Health Board, as well as local member organizations or Tribes. The 2019 National Tribal Health Conference (NTHC) is being hosted locally by the California Rural Indian Health Board.
