Develop and implement a strategic plan to deliver the CNAIR mission in collaboration with stakeholders, leadership circles, affiliates, and the Principal Investigator(s).

Oversee personnel hiring and supervise and evaluate all CNAIR personnel. Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, efficiency, engagement, growth, and excellence. Provide individual and team professional development opportunities while staying in current industry best practices.

Develop CNAIR’s national academic profile and partnerships towards cultivating a robust research portfolio in partnership with Native American and Indigenous Tribes and organizations that are community driven and community participatory.

Participate in planning and implementation of key CNAIR annual events and programs.

Facilitate interfacing and collaboration between the Center’s faculty affiliate and advisory network, Tribes and Tribal organizations, other Units on campus and local Native American community leadership. Represent CNAIR in other relevant Northwestern taskforces, workgroups, and committees.

Recruit Indigenous scholars, Tribal leaders and knowledge keepers to Northwestern’s campus to share and build knowledge and engage in research.

Oversee CNAIR’s leadership circles and run the Advisory Council meetings.

Build and maintain relationships and partnerships with tribes, urban centers, and Indigenous organizations across the country.

Network and build strong relationships with other academic and lay organizations working on putting research into action.

Represent the Center’s work in public forums.

Support institutional efforts to build visibility for the Center within Northwestern, engaging in task forces, committees, planning initiatives, and other leadership activities to become a valued partner across campus and disciplines.

Initiate outreach to Native and non-Native organizations, tribes, individuals, and media intended to broaden the impact of the Center’s research and enhance understanding by a variety of audiences of the political and cultural issues shaping and being shaped by Native communities.

Develop and monitor budgets for the Center, including revenue and expense projections, ensuring financial sustainability and responsible resource allocation.

Drive organizational transformation, streamlining processes and enhancing operational efficiency.

Clarify, define, and secure approval for funding student and Center activities. Build relationships with federal and philanthropic foundations and secure funding to support the ongoing operations of the Center.

Oversee and manage all operating, general, and endowed budget lines and prepare the annual budget with future projects and long-term strategic initiatives in mind.

Northwestern University 

The Center for Native American and Indigenous Research (CNAIR) operates as a hub for multi-disciplinary, collaborative work informed by and responsive to Native American and Indigenous nations, communities, and organizations. We foster an innovative and Indigenous-centered intellectual space that is open to multiple modes of engagement for faculty, students, staff, and community members. The Center commits to developing and promoting reciprocal and sovereignty-affirming relationships and partnerships with Native American and Indigenous communities.

The Executive Director plays the key leadership role in the management of CNAIR’s day-to-day operations including implementing strategic goals, securing and managing CNAIR’s funding, and managing CNAIR’s personnel and budget. The Executive Director leads public and community outreach and engagement activities including public relations, supporting CNAIR’s leadership circles and representing CNAIR throughout Northwestern’s schools, numerous units, and select work groups. The Executive Director supports CNAIR’s vast variety of public programming and academic initiatives that complement interdisciplinary research goals that are community driven and participatory, elevating Native American and Indigenous Scholarship.

This is a full-time position that works largely on-site with some opportunities for remote work.

The target hiring range for this position is between $110,260 - $130,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Executive Director, Center for Native American and Indigenous Research

Provides clinical behavioral health services to Tribal members of any age who are experiencing mental health symptoms.

Provide services including individual and family psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and rehabilitation services as necessary.

Provide individual and family counseling for an array of mental health symptoms.

Perform screenings, intake and assessment, interview client, family members, and others (as necessary), assess medical, emotional, social and educational information.

Provide information and outreach intervention services to Tribal members as requested.

Incumbent will be responsible to deliver culturally sensitive, competent behavioral health services to clients for KIC Tribal Health Clinic Behavioral Health Department. This position will determine nature of client’s situation through assessment, develop and initiate individualized treatment plans, provide individual and group counseling, facilitate all aspects of outpatient treatment, and document progress in an electronic health record. Incumbent will be responsible for general coordination of counseling services and have sufficient personal mobility to complete field work at various locations. General Ledger Accountant 


Directs personnel management for consistency in the programs and services of the KIC Finance Department. Monitors and approves staff development and training standards. Communicates job expectations and assists to resolve procedural problems. Ensures the personnel policies are followed, interprets policy and monitors personnel actions for adherence to Tribal policy. Monitors staff evaluations process and annual employee safety programs. Ensure adhere to local, state or federal standards for employee training, specifically, HIPAA compliance, safety, workplace violence, and preventing sexual harassment.

Recruits, selects, orientates, trains, coaches, counsels, and disciplines the department staff;

Recommends all hiring, promotions, wage / merit increases, transfers, discipline, and separation of all department employees per Tribal personnel policy to the Chief Financial Officer.


Monitors and enforces internal financial policies and procedures regarding the Finance Department budget. Coordinates with Chief Financial Officer in the preparation of the annual budget. Complies with federal regulations outlined in the self-governance compacts, and other state and federal funding sources. 

Administers the approved department operating budget by monitoring expenditures and recommending justifiable changes to supervisor.


Responsible for establishing and maintaining KIC Finance Department and administrative policies. The Controller position is a key leadership role within the Finance Department. Reviews operating results of the programs, compares them to the established objectives and takes steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results.

The Controller supervises payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, Grants Accountant, Staff Accountant and Finance Clerk.

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) performs most work assigned with a minimum assistance. Often leads a number of accountants, instructs them in work to be performed, reviews the work done, and directs necessary revisions. The CFO is able to make decisions on all but the most unusual accounting and auditing matters. When such problems arise, the CFO outlines concerns for the General Manager to review.

Incumbent supervises the Finance Department staff by providing and directing procedures and systems necessary to maintain proper records and to afford necessary accounting controls and services. Appraises the financial position and issues monthly financial and operating reports. Completes quarterly internal audits in preparation for annual audit.
