The Conflict Attorney will focus on representing Mille Lacs Band Members in the Court of Central Jurisdiction, which encompasses the Mille Lacs Band Tribal Court, as well as the 7th, 9th, and 10th Judicial Districts covering Mille Lacs, Morrison, Aitkin, Crow Wing, Kanabec, Pine, and Sherburne Counties. The range of legal services provided will include family law matters such as divorce, custody disputes, third-party custody, guardianship, child support, domestic violence cases, and child protection issues, as well as matters related to the Indian Child Welfare Act, housing law, estate planning, probate, and consumer issues.

The attorney will be tasked with effectively managing a caseload that includes about one-third of the conflict cases assigned to them. Key responsibilities involve, but are not limited to, attending court hearings either in person or virtually, thorough preparation and monitoring of cases, providing legal advice, and maintaining clear communication with Band Member clients. It will also involve determining and executing a litigation strategy that best protects the interests of Mille Lacs Band Members and their children.

Mille Lacs Band Of Ojibwe Legal Service 

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is currently searching for a dedicated and experienced Conflict Attorney who will be responsible for delivering legal services through the Client’s Band Member Legal Services Office. This role is crucial for ensuring that Mille Lacs Band Members receive the legal representation they need.

Native American candidates are highly encouraged to submit applications for this position. Qualified applicants must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and hold a valid license to practice law in Minnesota, with a willingness to obtain certification in the Court of Central Jurisdiction. They will have direct access and communication channels to TNC’s WA State Chapter Director in order to facilitate engagement and decision-making in regard to respectful and trusting relationships in Indian Country.

As part of the TNC WA Policy and Government Relations team this role will have consistent collaboration with TNC members of the team in engaging local, state, and federal government officials.

Working with TNC’s public funding team, philanthropy team, and other staff when needed to secure funding and investment in service to Indigenous-led conservation.

This position will be a member of the “Supporting Indigenous Rights and Connections to Lands and Waters” strategy team, and dependent on the candidate’s interest and discussions with chapter leadership, may serve as Co-Lead for that strategy.

Provide guidance and leadership in collaborating with Tribal Nations on land return, land access and engaging in opportunities to increase Tribal capacity to use, access and manage lands and waters of cultural significance.

Collaborate closely with conservation and science staff to develop equitable policy initiatives and guide government relations strategies that advance conservation goals.

Work with the Community and Tribal Relations team, to develop and implement high level efforts to deepen relationships, improve partnerships, and coordinate external relationships across internal teams, particularly with Tribal governments and their representatives.

The WA State Tribal Government Relations Director may negotiate complex and innovative agreements and/or partnerships with Tribal governments. TASKS:

Represents the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in all criminal, juvenile, dependency and/or comparable actions;

Represents the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation in all appeals of all criminal and juvenile actions;

Reviews reports and complaints to determine if court action should be filed;

Project Return is an initiative of the NPL to return Indian boarding school records to all survivors who want them. This project is currently funded by the Andrew W. Researchers will be required to complete the National Archives Researcher Orientation and additional safe document handling training. As Indian Boarding School survivors request the return of their records, field researchers will be tasked with fulfilling the requests by conducting records scanning at the NARA field offices. The hours for the NPL Field Researcher position will be highly variable and depend on the volume of requests and available records at each archive location.
