Under the Violence Against Women’s Act (VAWA) Tribes have the choice to apply for jurisdiction when a 

non-native person commits a crime of domestic violence 

on their reservation. At the summit U.S. Attorneys of the U.S. Department of Justice will present on the VAWA, and the U.S. Code §1304, that gives tribal jurisdiction over crimes of domestic violence. Special Tribal guest speakers will discuss their experience applying for VAWA & gaining jurisdiction.

Discussion will be held on the new state law creating an 

on Human Trafficking to discuss how tribes can partner with the FBI when tribe’s experience human trafficking on the reservation.

The National Indian Health Board (NIHB) National Tribal Health Conference is a week-long event that serves American Indian and Alaska Natives in the space of health - behavioral and public health. The conference will showcase the interconnectedness of policy, advocacy, and Indian health best practices. Programming includes tribal listening and consultation sessions, hands-on training opportunities, plenary sessions, and workshops that cover timely topics such as funding for Indian Health, the business of medicine, health equity, Indigenous determinants of health, tribal public health, behavioral health, culture, environmental health, and climate change. The conference also includes focus areas on Native youth, tribal veterans, and elders, a fitness event, exhibit hall and marketplace, culture night, poster sessions, and Heroes in Health Awards Gala and Outstanding Service Awards. 2024 National Tribal Health Conference: Tribal Health Equity on Our Terms

In 1953 farsighted tribal leaders in the Northwest formed the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians, and dedicated it to tribal sovereignty and self-determination. Today, ATNI is a nonprofit organization representing 57 Northwest tribal governments from Oregon, Idaho, Washington, southeast Alaska, Northern California, and Western Montana. ATNI is an organization whose foundation is composed of the people it is meant to serve.

Held during the National Congress of American Indians Executive Council Winter Session conference (February 12 - 15 2024), the Native Youth Leadership Summit (NYLS) is designed for youth leaders to meet and develop strategies for improving local and tribal communities through policy development and the resolution process. The Summit is a prime opportunity for Native Youth to learn how to become advocates for their communities while networking with their peers and tribal leaders from across Indian Country.

Each year, the President of the National Congress of American Indians presents the State of Indian Nations address to members of Congress, government officials, tribal leaders and citizens, and the American public. Delivered during the week that the President of the United States delivers the State of the Union, the State of Indian Nations is a speech that shares the positive and future-oriented vision of tribal nations. The speech outlines the goals of tribal leaders, the opportunities for success and advancement of Native peoples, and priorities to advance our nation-to-nation relationship with the United States.

The speech is delivered to a live studio audience in Washington, DC and broadcast across the nation and around the globe to policymakers, citizens, and students. Recent speeches have reached audiences of over 20,000 people. The speech reflects on the state of our nation-to-nation relationship and offers concrete recommendations where Congress and the Administration can partner more closely with tribal nations.

To facilitate direct engagement between Congress and tribal nations, a member of Congress is invited each year to deliver a Congressional response to the State of Indian Nations. Previous Congressional speakers have included Senator Maria Cantwell, Senator Lisa Murkowski, and Representative Tom Cole, among others. The event concludes with a live, interactive Q&A session with the audience, press, and those engaging via social media.

In 1968, California Tribal Leaders and Governor Ronald Reagan declared the fourth Friday of September as “California Indian Day.”

The “Native American Day” celebration on September 25, 2015, is an official State holiday, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1953 (Baca) and signed into law by Governor Pete Wilson on September 21, 1998. Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr., in 2011 wrote a Governor’s Proclamation highlighting this momentous and important day.

The Native American Day Celebration has become a time honored tradition in the Native American community.

52nd Annual California Native American Day

 is hosting a national webinar with federally recognized tribes across the country. This webinar is part of the Census Bureau’s ongoing efforts to improve and maintain a government-to-government relationship with tribes. This consultation is to discuss our proposed 2020 Census data products and the 2020 Disclosure Avoidance System (DAS). The DAS is a new, advanced, and far more powerful confidentiality protection system than previously used that employs a rigorous mathematical process to protect respondents’ information and identity.

This national webinar will provide a forum for the tribes to share insights, make recommendations, and discuss concerns with the Census Bureau, related to the transition to a new DAS to protect information provided by respondents on the 2020 Census, and publishing detailed race and ethnicity data from the 2020 Census, including detailed data on the American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
