ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements to protect the corporation’s legal, financial, regulatory, and sovereign interests.
2. Support day-to-day corporate legal needs, including providing timely and accurate advice to operational departments, and assisting with corporate governance, policy development, and other general matters.
3. Prepare memoranda, analyses and briefing materials, support strategic initiatives, and collaborate across departments and with executive leadership.
4. Advise on gaming compliance issues, including compact and internal control requirements, liquor licenses, and interactions with regulators.
5. Support enterprise risk management efforts, including reviews of insurance coverage and claims (including workers compensation), and risk-transfer strategies.
6. Provide counsel on employment and benefits-related issues, including workforce policies, investigations, and benefits compliance.
7. Provide legal support on procurement-related issues, marketing and entertainment contracts and initiatives, construction contracts, capital projects, real estate matters, and environmental issues.
8. Assist with protection and management of trademarks and corporate intellectual property.
9. Complete all required SGC training programs within the timeframe assigned.
10. Perform other duties as assigned.

Seneca Gaming Corporation 

The Corporate Counsel provides legal advice, counsel and representation in support of all operational, risk management and compliance activities, broadly collaborating across departments and functional areas. Primary responsibilities include contract drafting, review, and negotiation, and ensuring that all commercial arrangements protect the enterprise’s legal, financial, compliance, and sovereign interests. Based on experience, subject matter expertise, and organizational need, the Corporate Counsel may also assume broader responsibilities that may include corporate governance, gaming regulatory matters, employment and benefits issues, litigation management, risk management, construction, real estate, intellectual property and general corporate matters. All duties are to be performed consistent with Seneca Gaming Corporation’s policies and procedures, Internal Control Standards and objectives.


1. Must be 18 years of age or older upon employment.
2. Juris Doctorate required.
3. Must be admitted to the bar as an active member in good standing in New York or another jurisdiction within the United States (New York is preferred).
4. Must have at least three (3) years of progressively responsible legal experience, including private practice experience either in-house or for a global, national or regional law firm.
5. Prior contract review, in-house, casino industry, federal Indian law, or tribal enterprise experience preferred.
6. Must have proficient basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office and similar software tools.
7. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and be able to substantiate a safe driving record within the parameters acceptable to the corporation’s liability insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Oversee daily accounting activities, including but not limited to accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, prepaid expenses, post-award grant accounting, and accruals. Responsible for the quality of the data entered into the accounting system and the accuracy of the trial balance. Manages the monthly accounting close process and oversees the monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts. Ensures prompt, accurate month-end and year-end closings while maintaining GAAP compliance. Supervises, directs, and reviews the workflow of the accounts payable staff, including ensuring accurate invoice recording, timely payment, and overseeing the management and reconciliation of the accounts payable module within the financial system. Supervises, directs, and reviews the work of the accounts receivable staff, including ensuring accurate recording of charges, timely drawdowns of grant awards, timely collection of receivables, accurate recording of cash receipts, and overseeing the management and reconciliation of accounts receivable. Supervises, directs, and reviews the work of the payroll staff, ensuring accurate processing of weekly payroll and all related tax and compliance filings. Manages the integration of system payroll data with the financial and human resource systems. Oversees monthly cash account reconciliations, ensuring accurate and timely reconciliations and resolution of outstanding items. In collaboration with the Tribal Comptroller, evaluates accounting policies and procedures, identifying weaknesses in internal controls. Designs appropriate corrections to strengthen internal controls. Ver. 09232022 Page 1 of 2 Provides staff leadership and support to the annual financial statement audit. Provides coaching, mentoring, and guidance to effect positive outcomes. Performs other accounting assignments and tasks as required and requested by the Tribal Comptroller.

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe 

The Accounting Manager performs highly specialized accounting work required to maintain the MWT's general ledger and oversees accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash reconciliations, payroll, and post-award grant accounting functions. Working under the direction of the Tribal Comptroller, the Accounting Manager directs and coordinates the daily activities of the accounting staff. Ensures the prompt and accurate recording of revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities, while maintaining the integrity of internal controls. Leads the monthly close process.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED • Must possess an in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and extensive experience with computerized accounting systems. • Preferred Certified Public Accountant • Advanced knowledge and experience with financial accounting systems, spreadsheet functionality, and financial reporting writing applications. • Experience with financial accounting systems should be diverse, having worked with more than one system during one’s career. • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff at all levels of the organization. • Manage multiple tasks with efficiency and necessary priority. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting or finance. • Experience in governmental and/or non-profit fund accounting. Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience managing federal awards and accounting teams, including supervisory experience. • Four years of experience being responsible for the overall accounting system and the accuracy of the trial balance. OTHER REQUIREMENTS • Ideal candidate must possess strong leadership and interpersonal communication skills • Possess integrity and ethics in business. • The successful candidate must also pass a criminal offender record inquiry and pre-employment drug screening.

CILS Directing Attorneys report to the Director of Legal Programs and are responsible for the day-to-day operation of their field office. Directing Attorneys should have substantial knowledge of and experience with issues related to the client-eligible Native American individuals, Tribes and groups that are in the service area for the program. A strong, demonstrated expertise in federal Indian law and public interest law is preferred. The Directing Attorney's primary responsibility is to ensure the quantity and quality of the legal work and the effective, efficient representation of clients. The resulting responsibilities and duties include:

Collaborate with Senior Staff Attorneys and the Director of Legal Programs for the purpose of legal work management that includes Staff Attorney mentoring and supervision, assistance and administration of legal work management systems, grant and special project development and implementation, as directed by the Director of Legal Programs.

Office management and administration responsibilities include supervision of all attorney and non-attorney staff; ensuring that program policies and priorities are implemented; preparing any reports that are requested by the Director of Legal Programs, Director of Compliance & Legal Technology or Director of Human Resources & Administration; and participation with the Director of Legal Programs and Director of Human Resources & Administration in field office hiring of attorney and non-attorney support staff.

Client development responsibilities include developing and maintaining effective relationships with Tribal communities, Tribes, and Indian organizations in the service territory, including all funding sources, and ensuring that the office pursues and secures meaningful opportunities to work with Tribes, Tribal organizations, and Native American individuals throughout the service territory.

The Directing Attorney will also carry an appropriately sized caseload concomitant with other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Director of Legal Programs.

The Directing Attorney will have the opportunity to work under the direction of the Executive Director and Director of Legal Programs to build strong relationships with Tribes and Tribal communities in the Office service area. The Directing Attorney will regularly meet with Tribal leaders and Native American individuals to ensure delivery of service meets the needs of the region’s Tribal communities.

California Indian Legal Services 

Founded in 1967, California Indian Legal Services (CILS) is the oldest public interest Indian rights law firm in the country, promoting the fundamental rights of California Tribes and Indians through litigation, legislative and administrative advocacy, community development, and other strategies for systemic change. CILS provides a full range of legal representation to California Indian Tribes and Indian organizations, advocates for the rights of California Indians at the local, state, and national levels, and provides direct services and community education to low-income Native American individuals on issues related to Federal Indian Law. Currently, CILS offers services statewide and maintains four offices throughout California – Eastern (Bishop), Southern (Escondido), Northern (McKinleyville), and Central (Sacramento). This position is in the Southern Office, located in Escondido, CA.

2) Be a licensed attorney admitted in and in good standing with the California Bar.

3) Minimum of five years legal experience, preferably working with low-income Native Americans and/or Tribes, with substantial experience in federal Indian law or significant legal services practice. Equivalent general practice may be acceptable.

4) Substantial experience and knowledge of civil litigation.

5) Prior management and supervisory experience preferred.

6) A commitment to high quality legal services for Native Americans.

This program is a paid opportunity for Alaskan adults over 18 to explore career and internship pathways in marine and coastal research, environmental monitoring, archaeology, and Alaska Native cultural history and arts related to the coastal environment of Southcentral Alaska.
